How I do what I do

Pastel is such a versatile medium that artists can create works using many different techniques. Here’s how I created Fields of Gold – a beautiful scene captured on a quick stop to change drivers on the long road home between Sydney and Melbourne. We stopped, stretched our legs and there it was right in front of us.

This painting began with a few quick positioning lines
I used a range of vibrant colours to set the scene – it’s now ready for the underpainting
The rich colours were washed with rubbing alcohol to achieve a watercolour like underpainting
Putting pastel over the underpainting to create vivid detail
The finished painting – pastels successfully capturing light playing on roadside grasses
